Polkadot is known as a layer-0 metaprotocol as it underlies parachains (a format for a network of layer-1 blockchains). The protocol aims to connect permissionless networks, public and private chains, oracles, and future technologies. Such an aim is driven by the goal of allowing blockchain networks to share information and transactions through the Polkadot Relay Chain.
The native token of Polkadot is DOT, which serves three primary purposes, such as facilitating network governance, staking for security and operations of the networks, and bonding tokens to connect parachains.
