About Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC)
Wrapped Bitcoin is a tokenized version of Bitcoin. It is not a Bitcoin but instead, a separate ERC-20 token, designed to track the value of Bitcoin. The primary objective behind the creation of WBTC was to enable Bitcoin holders to participate in DeFi apps that are popular on Ethereum.
Wrapped Bitcoin allows quicker transactions of Bitcoin on the Ethereum blockchain. This opens up the possible usage of using BTC in the Ethereum ecosystem.
Founders of Wrapped Bitcoin
In 2019, BitGo, Kyber Network, and Ren teamed up to find ways to enable users to bring more liquidity to the Ethereum ecosystem. This resulted in the creation of Wrapped Bitcoin.
Use Cases of WBTC
As more DeFi activities occur on the Ethereum blockchain, the holders of Bitcoin have no access to various DeFi applications, which include essential features like trading, lending, borrowing, etc.
